Melissa is interviewed for CBS Sunday Morning.

Actress Melissa McCarthy enjoys studying people, whether it’s for comedic performances, riotous impersonations, or the more dramatic role for which she’s been nominated for an Academy Award, playing one of the most prolific literary forgers in history in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Lee Cowan talked with McCarthy about her portrayal of Lee Israel, the bestselling biographer who in her later years typed her way into a life of petty crime.

She earned a best actress nomination at this year’s Oscars for her portrayal of author and literary forger Lee Israel

Melissa McCarthy delivered both hilarious and heartbreaking moments in her Oscar-nominated performance as author and literary forger Lee Israel in Can You Ever Forgive Me? But she considers one of the film’s more sentimental scenes her favorite.

“My favorite moment, which was the hardest moment, was our last scene,” the actress, 48, says in PEOPLE’s Oscar Portfolio in this week’s issue. “The lovely Richard E. Grant, when you know he’s dying of AIDS, that whole scene, when we kind of rekindle as best as we can what our friendship was, and he says, ‘Make me 29 and don’t make me stupid.’ And I’m probably ruining the quote, but I can never get through it.”

Grant, 61, also earned an Oscar nomination, for best supporting actor, for playing one of Israel’s partner in crime and one of her only friends. His quote refers to how his character wants to be portrayed in Israel’s memoir, on which the movie is based.

“He was so beautiful in that,” McCarthy says of Grant’s heartfelt performance. “That was the moment for me where I just thought, oh, he’s amazing.”

McCarthy also appreciates the work of her fellow best actress nominee, The Wife star Glenn Close.

“One of my favorite moments in the world is Glenn Close in Dangerous Liaisons, when she’s shamed at the end and people turn on her,” McCarthy reveals, referring to the 1989 drama also starring John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer. “And you watch her in the movie completely flush red. There’s no CGI. It’s just her feeling it and her body reacting, and I literally remember being like, did everyone freak out? When that happened, and they got it on film, they must have just lost their minds. It still gives me chills to think about.”

McCarthy and Close, 71, are up against Yalitza Aparicio (Roma), Olivia Colman (The Favourite) and Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born).

The 91st Academy Awards take place on Feb. 24 and air live on ABC at 8 p.m. ET.

Variety has shared a list of additional presenters for the Academy Awards ceremony which includes Melissa!

UPDATED: Chris Evans, Brie Larson, and Awkwafina have been announced as presenters for the Academy Awards, along with Daniel Craig, Tina Fey, Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Lopez, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Amandla Stenberg, Charlize Theron, Tessa Thompson, and Constance Wu.

They will be joined by Javier Bardem, Angela Bassett, Chadwick Boseman, Emilia Clarke, Laura Dern, Samuel L. Jackson, Stephan James, Keegan-Michael Key, KiKi Layne, James McAvoy, Melissa McCarthy, Jason Momoa, and Sarah Paulson.

Oscar producers Donna Gigliotti and Glenn Weiss will continue to reveal presenters in the coming weeks. The Academy also said conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic will perform during the “In Memoriam” segment.

Variety recently reported that the show will feature musical performances of the five original-song nominees, after backlash to the news that only two nommed songs would be performed. The Academy also tweeted that “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns” would be “performed by a surprise special guest,” which could indicate that Emily Blunt, who sang it in the film, will make a surprise appearance.

“From blockbuster hits to intimate tales of the human spirit, the movies we celebrate at the Oscars connect us in a way that is both moving and powerful,” said ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke. “Donna and Glenn will deliver a tribute worthy of the talent that will present and receive Oscar gold, and I’m so proud that ABC is home to this monumental night.”

The 91st Oscars will be held on Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, and will be televised live on ABC at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
